The Art of "Cider Made Simple"

I just received the galleys for Cider Made Simple, and was struck by the art of Lydia Nichols.  When Chronicle made the decision to do art rather than use photography, I was skeptical.  Photos can work really well as narrative, illustrating in a glance what it takes me a paragraph to describe.  But art has its own virtues.  In Nichols' rendering, it captures the spirit of cider-making--a rusticity that defines a drink that comes from the orchards.  Have a look:
